1/3/11 - 2/27/11
Happy New Year!
Yep, it's a fresh start, and my ideas have been spinning. I've decided (as teacher and exec. producer of this class) that we need a change! So, you being the luckiest students in the world are going to help me carry out a plan.
Idea 1: (This is not a suggestion. It's a HUGE graded requirement. I used the word idea to sound kind and encouraging)
We are going to totally revamp BASH -- Your style!
You will have this week to plan and turn in your formal ideas. (That doesn't mean short little paragraphs, but an entire detailed plan describing each segment in your show)
1. You and a two partners will produce a week of BASH. You will design the format and the flow.
2. The three of you will be totally in charge to assure that your show goes as planned.
3. You will come up with the various segments for the morning announcements....THE SHOW STYLE MUST BE DIFFERENT. (This BASH production is MY idea.)
4. Yep, that means you are responsible for NEW GRAPHICS (You will make them- you can ask any person in the class for help....they have to agree. Remember, you must help each other.)
5. One mandatory requirement is that you feature something REMARKABLE in our school through CREATIVE news packages.
REVIEW OF REQUIREMENTS
1. Format of show - including segment details
2. Staff list - Include specific job descriptions
3. Graphics
4. Remarkable and Creative news packages
5. Map of Studio set up
6. Draw camera directions
7. Provide a listing of camera movements throughout your show
8. Provide a format script
-Include the general format of the show....cues/cuts
-Intro and exit statement to each segment.....they must be specific....I mean word for word!
-Specific camera directions, set-up, movement plans
9. You will be responsible for a daily meeting before your show.
**10. RESPONSIBILITY LIST:
-You will make a list of every person in the class
-Include a specific duty that they will be assigned
-Include the duties and requirements
-Also, include the DATE IT WILL BE DUE
**YOU MUST FILM AN INTRO VIDEO BY FRIDAY, 1/14....YOU WILL SHOW THE ORIGINAL GROUP MEMBERS AND EXPLAIN WHAT YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH DURING THE WEEK. THIS WILL AIR PRIOR TO YOUR FIRST PRODUCTION.
- REMEMBER, ALL WORK FOR THE SHOWS MUST BE COMPLETED BY FRIDAY, 1/14. WE WILL BE AIRING OUR SEGMENTS BEGINNING ON TUESDAY, 1/18.
BECAUSE WE HAD MANY SNOW DAYS AND TWO HOUR DELAYS, THE DATES HAVE CHANGED:
GROUP 1: 1/24 - BRITT, ALLY, ALEX
GROUP 2: 2/8- TRAVIS, MORGAN, DAKOTA
GROUP 3: 2/15 -ALLIE, MARY, TYLER
GROUP 4: 2/22 -BELLA, ED, AMANDA, ZACH
GROUP 5: 2/27 KIM, CHAD, ALYSSA
GROUP 6: 3/1 -THERESA, ADAM, ALEC
YOU WILL BE GRADED FOR YOUR PRODUCTION AS WELL AS YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE OTHER GROUPS. (EACH GROUP WILL EVALUATE YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEIR GROUPS)
I have noticed that many of you are arriving late.....YOU must be here by 7:35 or you will be replaced and not receive a grade for the day. Remember, the success of BASH is your responsibility. We air at exactly 7:45. (The time you are required to be in your homeroom. You are permitted 10 minutes of locker time before the hr bell rings. Since we go to our lockers after BASH, you must be here by 7:35. )
Deadlines:
-The 10 written requirements will be turned in by Wednesday, 1/5/11
-You will turn in storyboards for your graphics by Friday, 1/7/11
-Your segment graphics will be due by Wednesday, 1/12/11
-We will broadcast each BASH for 1 week
-You won't know what week, I get to pick them. (So, you will only be informed on Thursday prior to your production week)
____________________________________________________________________
IDEA 2: (Again, this is an encouraging title......)
FINAL WORK IS DUE ON FRIDAY, 2/11
SENIOR VIDEO:
1. You will each be assigned a section of the senior video
2. You will complete it by 1/30/10.... NO EXCUSES...I WILL NOT ALTER MY DEADLINE! I DON'T CARE HOW NICE YOUR ARE OR HOW MUCH WORK YOU HAVE TO DO!

Goal: Students will review and discuss camera directions and angles.
Students will review two worksheets.
Students will discuss the following planning and technique tips
Students will choreograph a project
(From our books) Tips:
HOW TO SHOOT A QUALITY VIDEO:
PLAN -If you plan your shots in advance you'll get your shots more quickly. Directors of big budget films frequently create tight drawing called storyboards of every single shot in their movie before they every start a camera, a process that could take months. However, I will settle for doodles of each shot and camera angle/ change.
Plan...but be ready to improvise, too. It's like singing a song. You don't need to know the whole thing, but don't start without knowing what the tune and first verse are.
KEEP IT SIMPLE:
A good video trick is a short video trick. If your idea takes more that a page to describe, it's probably too long.
ACTING:
You must be believable. If seven books fall on your foot, react in pain. It is essential that your audience believe what your are doing on film.
(Hideous acting can be great only if it is incredibly bad!!)
Basic elements:
Coordinating a scene is very much like choreographing a dance move. All participants must rehearse...this includes the production staff.
Establish your shot- Give the audience a big first view so they understand the context of your production. Capture the entire set/ background/ scene.
Camera Angles- see worksheet
The 180 rule- When you are shooting a character, stay to one side of them. If you are filming the right side, do not switch to the left. This will leave your shot awkward and unbalanced.
Eye line match-This is two or more shots. Show your character looking something or pointing to it. Hold this shot for a few seconds, then cut to what they are looking at. Be sure that the second shot is shot from his/ her eye level and angle.
Over the shoulder shots- switch back and forth between your subjects
Action shots- Mike stands on a bench, looks down and jumps. As he begins to jump, cut to a different view.
The Dolly shot- move with your subject. Sometimes it is easier to roll with your subject.
**Storyboards are required and MUST match up to your video. You will only receive 50% of your grade if you cannot provide this element of planning.
Project: Staging
1. Review video sample
2. discuss established shots. Create secondary storyboards
3. discuss shots and sound effects
Directions:
1. Open with a wide shot. Include both characters in one shot from one side. Stick with this side for this shot.
2. Hold the established shot and let characters take a few swings and cuts at each other.
3. Practice so everyone knows where each person is working and acting
-You must memorize all steps and actions.
""ll start with one jab. You duck. Then you do two jabs , and I'll duck. Next,...)
The sound effect person must practice too.
4. In the middle of a swing, stop the camera and switch to a new point of view, over the shoulder. This way you can use the momentum of the action to carry through the cut. It keeps the action moving)
5. The big trick. Shoot over the shoulder . If the camera man backs away and zooms in, you'll create an illusion that the fighters are much closer than they really are.
-Camera will be in full zoom 5 to 6 feet away from the subject
-The fighters are always too far apart to actually reach each other. On top of which, everybody knows what is going to happen next...it's practice!
Add sound effects and let's get started!!!!!
1.2.11.B-Use and understand a variety of media and evaluate the quality of material produced 1.5.11.B- Write using well-developed content appropriate for the topic 1.5.11.C- Write with controlled and/ or subtle organization

(That doesn't mean short little paragraphs, but an entire detailed plan describing each segment in your show)
1. You and a partner will produce a week of BASH. You will design the format and the flow.
2. The two of you will be totally in charge to assure that your show goes as planned.
2. Staff list
3. Graphics
4. Remarkable and Creative news packages
5. Map of Studio set up
6. Draw camera directions
7. Provide a listing of camera movements throughout your show

-The 7 written requirements will be turned in by Wednesday, 1/6/10

-Your segment graphics will be due by Wednesday, 1/13/10
-Remember your senior video segment is due on Friday, 1/22/10
-We will broadcast each BASH for 1 week
-You won't know what week, I get to pick them. (So, you will only be informed on Thursday prior to your production week)
IDEA 2: (Again, this is an encouraging title......)
